![]() ![]() As X1 is to Sonic 2, X3 is to Sonic 3 & Knuckles. So that's why I see it a bit through the Sega lens. I was a Sega Genesis kid growing up, so I only played MMX at friends' houses and then with later reissues. I love X1 and think it deserves the hype, but X3 was totally slept on, imo. Zero never confronts Bit in Mega Man X3, since X always intervenes at every boss shutter, (aside for the mini boss in Doppler Stage 2. In fact, Agile holds a part of Zeros body. There's a lot to like about exploring & re-exploring the stages even after you've passed through to take down the boss. Agile fights X twice in Mega Man X2, long before Zero is revived, though Zero is seen fighting Agile in the introduction sequence to the 32-bit versions of Mega Man X3. Being able to summon the mecha walker is awesome. I found myself enjoying using the boss weapons throughout the stages - the acid one in particular, but the gravity one and the drill - all cool. X is more fun to play as in X3 than X1-4, imo. ![]() In X4, it is significantly more fun to play as Zero, imo.īut X3 is I think the most fun version of X's movesets, especially with the vertical stages, which makes "moving" and "exploration" bigger parts of the Mega Man gameplay. I like the Zero campaign in X4 a lot, but I think his use in X3 is maybe a bit better being a tease given how much more fun he is to play as than X. ![]() He comes in to save you multiple times, then dies in the line of duty. It's one of many ways that I think the intention is for multiple play-throughs - Zero is literally a red shirt partner he's SUPPOSED to die. I had a lot more problems that are escaping my memory since finishing it, but it really stuck out as the weakest of the bunch on the X1-4 collection for me. The armors similarly weren't very practical or even enjoyable to use outside of their brief need for gated upgrade parts. Outside of a few gates to unlock for upgrades, most are ineffective or not additive to efficiently helping clear stages. It's delayed to fire, doesn't really do that much added damage, and is just all around poorly implemented.Įnemy subweapons are mostly worthless as well. Buster was way too weak and ineffective and the upgraded version is actually worse than the de-powered one. Played it entirely through on the Legacy Collection recently and though I did kind of enjoy the increased challenge, which did cause me to bounce in and out of stages hunting for powerups to help survive bosses(something I never had to do in other MM titles), there was a LOT to dislike. ![]()
